Foursquare – The Next Dodgeball?

October 2009, I’ve just read the description by Cybercom of a new social platform called Foursquare:

Users in 34 cities in the United States and Canada, as well as London and Amsterdam, “check in” with a mobile at a bar, restaurant or art gallery, alerting their friends to their current location so they can drop by and say hello.

Does it sound familiar ? Here is what Leah Culver was writing about a social platform called Dodgeball in January 2009.

My group of friends uses Dodgeball to “check in” at various bars, restaurants and private venues (house parties) around San Francisco. Every night I get a bunch of text messages telling me which bars my friends are at and the exact street addresses of those bars.

Knowing that Dodgeball was killed by Google in  2009, should we be optimistic about Foursquare future ?
